Deep Sea and more Hackweek
12:00am EST - Rust development trucks along as the month continues.
Hackweek Continues
Hack Week continues this week, with the devs diving deeper into their experimental projects and prototypes. Expect more quirky features and creative concepts to pop up on staging as they explore ideas outside the usual development cycle.
Zombies - Not much info available but definitely interesting!
Procedural Snow - Showing footsteps and displacement in snow
Base Heating - Experiments around options for full base heating
Demo experiments - Some miscellaneous experiments with demo functionality
Deep Sea Branch
A brand-new “deep sea” branch just surfaced in commits, and it looks like the team is laying groundwork for something big out on the ocean. So far, we’re seeing fixes and tweaks to world bounds, colliders, entity management, some handy admin commands like enterdeepsea and createdeepsea for testing, and even islands.
The system now consolidates into a single DeepSea entity managed at the center of the map, with colliders placed around the ocean to define the area. Network grid size has also been doubled to cover a massive -8k to +8k range, and the deep sea’s location shifted closer in from -8000 to -4000. For now, it’s mostly backend prep and debugging tools, but clearly the foundation is being set for new content lurking beneath the waves.
Team Bag Labels
A handy quality-of-life feature is on the way: team bag labels. When looking at a sleeping bag, you’ll now see the owner’s name above the tooltip if they’re a teammate, making it way easier to tell whose bag is whose. Streamer mode is supported too, so names won’t slip through. This one’s likely landing with the September update.
