2:40pm EST - A quiet start to a new week in Rust development. Garry is heads down in the UI Reboot and the rest of the team is working on miscellaneous things. Before we get into all that, I want to inform you, I am wiping the main server today...
On Friday, all servers wiped for the big update of the week. This update included a bug which caused keyboards to lock up. Saturday morning, a patch was released for both clients and servers to fix this. This patch inadvertently caused a checksum error when trying to load map saves, forcing another wipe. Because it was not mandatory, some servers ran this update and others didn’t. We’re in the latter category, meaning we’re out of date and the next update we run will force a wipe.
Along with being out of date, performance is pretty shitty right now (180k entities on the map). Although Garry is aware of the issues and has some idea’s on how to improve performance, we’re not likely to see an update which addresses this for a couple days. Given this, I’m making the call to get the server up to date and set a new map seed so we can run as smooth as possible for the next few days.
As always, I am prioritizing smooth gameplay over all else. Good news for you people in the north east - you’ll have a fresh start as you hunker in for the storm of the century. I’ll be running the update and posting a map of the new seed within the hour.
Where’d the dev server go?
Along with updating the main server, I’m getting the dev server back up to date with the development branch. Given I updated this server over the weekend, a wipe should not be required. There was a protocol++ today so clients will have to opt in to the development beta again to see the dev branch server. Here’s how you do that:
Right click Rust on your steam library
Go to the BETAS tab
Select "Development - The latest updates"
Hit ok and run the update
You’ll see our server right on the Official tab
Update: Never mind, it did force a wipe.
Garry is powering through on the UI Reboot with the goal of getting it merged into the development branch in the next couple days. No further visuals on this yet, however, we are seeing some nice tweaks to functionality showing up. Specifically, you’ll skip the death screen when you join if it’s not necessary. These little tweaks to the user experience make a big difference over time. Expect a full write up of the new UI once it hits the development branch this week.
Unity beta 21
The team updated to Unity beta 21. If you’re interested in the specifics, check out the Unity beta release notes.
Tier 1 building skin
Vincent is making some awesome progress with the new Tier 1 building skin. It is still undecided how exactly this tier will be implemented (replace current tier 1 or be an additional tier), one thing is clear, it looks fucking sweet! Here’s some pictures he posted to trello:
Daniel and Howie are both working on the new hangar. Looking good!
