Hackweek is on!

1:00pm EST - Our update stream is live! twitch.tv/rustafied

12:00am EST - A new month of Rust development is underway and the team is working on another hackweek! If you’re unfamiliar, this is when the devs are able to work on whatever projects they want. Keep in mind, not all of these ideas will necessarily make it into the game, but hackweek’s have been a source of some great features!

Our update preview stream goes live at 1pm EST. Follow @Rustafied for news throughout the day.

Hotfixes

You may have noticed some optional updates for the Rust client over the weekend. This is not unusual after a forced wipe - sometimes fixing small things, other times, more critical. Long and short, this update had some issues causing certain maps to be corrupt on server restarts. These issues have thankfully been resolved, however, it did cause some servers to have to unexpectedly map wipe. Sorry to anyone who lost progress due to this, we do our best to avoid such things, but sometimes it is out of our control.

Lunar New Year items

Some festive items are on their way in for Lunar New Year on February 10th. So far we’re seeing a new spear (skin of the wooden spear), a dragon launcher (rocket launcher skin, and a white lantern. Like previous Lunar skins, these will likely be available on the item store for purchase for a limited time. No word on price yet, but I’ll link once the item store is updated later today.

Edit: The Lunar New Year items are live on the item store! Read more about them here. Also note: there is just one lantern (the red one) and you can change it to white.

Meals

Now, onto the hackweek projects! First, a new form of cooking and creating meals is being experimented with. Using a new cooking pot which is deployed on a campfire, players may soon be able to create complex and nutritious meals with potential extra benefits. It looks like 2 types of ovens are also in process.

As with all these hackweek projects, this may or may not make it into the game eventually.

Tea prototyping

Next on the hackweek project list, a bunch of new tea types are being played with. Again, none of these may ever actually make it into the game, but here are some of the tea types they are experimenting with:

  • Breathing underwater tea

  • Tracking animals through objects tea

  • Increased crafting speed tea (50% faster)

  • Increased recycling speed (double speed)

  • Explosive sense tea (shows an arc and blast radius when throwing explosives)

  • Health regen tea, slowly heals the player by 1hp/s if they are not in combat (not been attacked/attacked something else for 15s) and have greater than 0 food and water

  • Auto smelt tea, automatically smelts metal/high quality metal/sulfur ore in the players main inventory into the their respective smelted forms every 5s.

  • A tea that doubles speed of weapon deploy animation

  • Also, if a player has more than three teas active they get a negative poison effect

Vehicle weapons

Also being worked on this hackweek, weapons for vehicles! Specifics are scarce, but it looks like a type of vehicular cannon may one day be added!

Harbor tweaks for cargo ship

Off the hackweek items, work on updating existing monuments continues in a new facet this week. Although we’re still seeing some work on the compound redesign, there’s also a new branch related to updating a harbor. Details are fleeting, but based on commits it looks like this updated harbor might allow for the cargo ship to dock or stop at it.

Given this is not a hackweek project, it’s highly likely this updated harbor will make it in eventually. We’ll keep you updated as mores details come to light.

Other stuff

  • Full base heating concept (hackweek)

  • Some gunplay things being played with (hackweek)

  • Fixed a bunch of the barrel stuff, added labels for oil and diesel

  • More work on new explosion effects

  • More work on a new military truck (M939)

  • Cliff reworks (another hackweek project)
