They're back!

3/24 @ 4:30pm EST - The update is out! Our servers are back and updating now. Oh, and check out devblog 103.

3/24 @ 11:15am EST - Garry is knocking out some other small changes before the update hits. Most notably: clothes and armor now can have condition, lose on damage, protect relative to condition, and can break. Our data center is still having connectivity issues, we expect them to be resolved by later this afternoon.

3/24 @ 9:00am EST - Our servers are experiencing some downtime, expect them back soon. Also, we're seeing a couple new small changes today including:

  • Right clicking clothes in inventory tries to wear them
  • Reduced craft time of wooden, barbed and metal barricades
  • Fixed syringe etc having to be holstered/deployed to reuse (on modded servers with stack size increase)

3/24 @ 12:56am EST - Most of the commits we've seen this week relate to the XP or procedural map generation systems – both of which we won’t see before April 7th. Given this, I wouldn't expect a ton of new content in today's update. Here are a couple things which have made it in so far:

  • Eating cans of food leaves an empty can (which can be melted on campfire for frags)
  • A crude oil world model has been added (see here)
  • Some new inventory UI sounds have been added (mainly when dragging items)

5:10pm EST - The Facepunch team is back from GDC and a new week of Rust development is underway. Although there haven’t been a ton of commits yet, we are seeing progress on the leveling system, procgen, and sounds. I would expect an update to hit this week, however, don’t count on anything major - Garry and Helk’s main focus is on the leveling system...

Leveling system

Aiming to make good on the quarter 1 deadline, Garry and Helk are cranking away on the new XP system. There is still a bunch of work to do, but with just over 2 weeks before the April forced wipe, I think that goal is possible (and a bit of a stretch).

Given this focus, I wouldn’t expect too much excitement from the update this Thursday (3/24) and next (3/31).

Procedural generation

Andre is focusing on the next iteration of the procedural map generation. So far we’re just seeing some changes to bush placement - but I’d expect a bit more than that by the time it launches on April 7th.

Inventory UI Sounds

Alex is working on a new branch called, "inv-ui-sounds." Although we can't yet hear this for ourselves, it appears we'll be getting some additional audio while working our inventories in the near future.

Rustafied wipe schedule

This month is a bit special because there are 5 Thursdays. That leaves bi weekly wipe schedule servers in a bit of a conundrum. Do you wipe after 2 weeks then have a 1 week cycle or do you last 3 weeks till the next forced wipe?

Given the current performance of the game, we’re choosing the latter, and doing a 2 week then a 1 week cycle. That means our medium, dev branch, hapis and savas servers will wipe with the update next Thursday (3/31). Low pop will wait till April 7th, and main, as always, will wipe each week.

Guide updates

We’re still trucking along on our guides - updating information, removing out of date things, fixing formatting, etc. Along with our new guide for hosting a Rust server with Linux, we now have a newly rewritten guide for getting the best FPS in Rust - a special thanks to CatMeat for authoring this!

If you’re interested in being part of the guide team we’re creating, please email me at rustafied@gmail.com. We’re having a meeting Saturday evening to create a structure for keeping the guides up to date on an ongoing basis.
