It's motherfucking update time!

8/28 @ 1:28pm EST - There was a client / server update earlier this morning which fixed a couple things:

  • Hitches when opening the inventory
  • Fix for news not showing
  • Projectiles now keep history of bones they've hit
  • Friends list now clears out old friends

5:40pm EST - The update just hit and the devblog is live. Our main (250 slot) server just wiped.

3:00pm EST - The update stream is live! twitch.tv/rustafied

1:30pm EST - Given the huge changes to gameplay and the fact a ton of people are requesting a wipe on main, I've decided to put it to a vote. http://strawpoll.me/5330734

12:00pm EST - Boy, we've got a good one this week. A new menu system, throwbacks to legacy, new sounds and animations, along with some significant changes to gameplay. This update will not force a map or BP wipe, however, some servers may choose to wipe anyway.

Our update stream goes live at 3pm and follow @Rustafied for news throughout the day. Let’s get into it...

Menu updates

The menu system has been completely revamped. With a much more versatile home screen, tabs for store and inventory, new global stats, and added information for servers; this iteration of the menu provides more functionality than ever. Here are some screens:

Note to server owners: Here are the new server cvars you can set...

  • server.description - A text description of your server (can be pretty long)
  • server.headerimage - A URL to the image which shows up on the server details screen (dimensions are 512x256)
  • server.url - The URL to your servers website

Bandana added

The next level of Rust face fashion has arrived; the bandana is in. A default blueprint costing 40 cloth and taking 20 seconds to craft, the bandana provides no protection from the elements. At the moment, you can only pair it with a boonie hat, so it puts a bit of a damper on the whole ‘protecting your head’ thing. It does, however, look pretty cool...

Lazy aim

Legacy players will feel a bit more at home with the new gunplay dynamics this week. Lazy aim (where subtle mouse movements cause the barrel of a gun to move rather than the whole viewport) has been added. Check out our update summary video to see this in action.

Ladder changes

In perhaps the biggest change to gameplay this week, ladders no longer bypass building permission (they also have more health). Could this be the end of multiple overhangs on every fucking base? I hope so...

Hit detection

Complementing the new lazy aim, hit boxes have been completely revamped by Andre. Not only making hitbox detection more accurate, he has also added the first iteration of bullet penetration. This means projectiles now travel through multiple body parts, making the damage system much more advanced.

Decay changes

Helk has switched up the decay system pretty drastically. Legacy players will feel right at home as decay now works based on a timer which is reset every time an attached (locked) door is used. Expect some balance to be needed on this one; decay is a finicky mistress.

Item / crafting balance

The cost and crafting times for a bunch of items has been tweaked this week. Most low level items now take half the time to craft (awesome) while several articles of clothing are now more expensive (doh!). Here are some details:

  • Longsleeve shirt now costs 80 cloth (was 50)
  • Snow jacket is now 250 cloth (was 150)
  • Boots now require 50 leather (was 50 cloth)

New animations

Mihn has completed a bunch of new animations this week, mostly in the realm of players getting hurt and wounded.

New sounds

Alex has been killing it in the sound department this week. With new sounds for distant gunshots, c4, building demolition, beancan grenades and more, expect to hear a bunch of new things when the update hits.
