Wipe, super-sonic airdrops, invisible walls and lodbias

5:10pm EST - Just wiped our main official server. You can find the new map here.

1:16pm EST - After being postponed yesterday, the update launched early this morning with the devblog following shortly after. For a full summary of what's new, check out my post from yesterday. So far, everything seems to be running pretty smooth with the exception of some physics issues...

Wiping main

As mentioned at the bottom of today’s devblog, there are some physics issues showing up once servers reach 150,000 colliders. Basically, everything starts going to shit after that point. Given our main server is at 120,000 colliders and counting (on target to hit 150 by later this evening), we will be wiping at 5pm EST today to ensure smooth gameplay for the weekend.

Low Pop live

As I mentioned yesterday, we have opened a new, low population server aimed at extending the time between forced wipes. If you’re looking for a slightly less clusterfuck of an environment with fewer wipes, check out “Rustafied.com - Low Pop” on the official server tab.

Invisible building parts

One of the big performance enhancements with this update is the addition of LODs to the building parts. This renders lower resolution versions when farther away. Although this has produced some performance boosts, there is an unfortunate side effect: at some distances, walls are invisible, allowing people to see some inner workings of the buildings (like where cupboards are placed). This will probably be worked out next week as they add more LODs for other parts and tweak the system. In the meantime, raiders will be using this to their advantage.

Airdrop speed

The cargo plane has turned into a stealth bomber. That slow moving, loud ass motherfucker now has some form of whisper-warp drive. It’s truly something to see it bolt across the sky, virtually silent. The goal of it flying higher was originally to draw more people to the drop site, however, I fear we’ve taken a step in the opposite direction. If you’re lucky enough to even notice the plane above, it’s gone within the blink of an eye.

graphics.lodbias

The newest graphic cvar appears to provide an extra FPS boost when needed. It’s not in the F2 menu yet so you’ll need to pull up console (F1) and manually set it. The default value is .5 and lowering it to something like .2 appears to provide a nice little FPS improvement.

Other last minute changes

  • Torch is cheaper (costs 30 wood, 1 cloth, and 20 low grade fuel)

  • Metal Hatchet doesn’t lose condition as fast

  • Urban pants protect a little better
